This is more of a moan than anything else..
i was after a cheap field bike, so i bid on several and ended up with a few..!!
first one was from york, an old kawasaki AE50, described as not been run for a while and stored in shed for two years,
i emailed and asked questions about it to be told 'it's my sons but i'll find out'
in the end i won it and for 36, what a bargain..20 i diesel..though!!
travelled up there to find... a rusty shed, no compression and to be told it used to run when it was bumped but packed up after a bit, so seeing as i won it i had to have it i suppose..
on strip down, engine was the wrong one, totally wrong make, yamaha..!! gear lever welded on and wrong, kickstart welded on and fell off..
no compression, carb knackered and gerally full of crap...good tyres though..
so much for the description...
second one, another AE50 from gainsborough, bought for 50 and 15 diesel..with the idea of spares for the first...
told needed rings and rebore so all good..i thought, this might be better.
when i get it back and under closer inspection, front brake seized and booloxed, clutch gone, engine was right, but piston was cracked and knackered. plus head had been off and glued back on with sealer..frame cracked in two places..this has all come about three months after i got it due to to many jobs on the go..no two stroke bottle, and pump knackered,
it was described as running by my son untill engine started to go....so the faults were missed of the description and the guy 'forgot' to mention on collecting..
it was not washed as to hide the bracks, and if his son rode it, thank god he did'nt have an accident..!!!
my third one is the best..described as a yamaha DT50 with honda 90 conversion, but no engine, so a rolling frame..
40 from manchester, 15 diesel..went to fetch it, got there had a chat got the engine for free, bike was better than described,
told engine is shafted but if you want it for spares take it..i did..
got the bike back, fitted engine, sorted out the carb and it fired up, no problems, engines a bit tired and woodruff key is wornbut still goes, bike is solid, and well looked after..very pleased with it too...
so moral is, always read into the description, it's usually a load of bob ...just need rebore means it's knackered or more than a rebore is needed,a rebore and hone is required at around 30 then the piston and rings at 25 and gaskets 5..so this simple rebore cost's a lot more than you first thought..
also don't forget if it's sold as had a new piston and barrel, has it had a rebore, been honed, new rings, run in, etc etc..any one can buy a barrel or piston kit or rings and fit it, and tell you it's been dont, but has it been done right ?? and fully ??
ask any motorcrosser about a new barrel and piston afer nearly every meeting !!
so..two described as nearing ok were dangerous and unfit without spending loads on them, and the final one was under described but the best of the three...
if you want a cheap bike on a budget go for it, but be aware that the description is not always true...if you are thinking of spending loads on a real bike make sure all the bits that have been done have been done right..also when it's been bored by how much ?? so when you need new rings or more work doing you know what to expect..nothing like buying a standard piston kit to find you need a 40mm and not the standard 38mm you have just bought !!
or if you are a seller, don't tell lies or mislead people, tell the truth, you'll find more people will bid if it's the truth..
i know a couple of people i'm not buying from again..!!
anyway moan over, but if your like me and have been let down, or have got a real bargain please let me know.
i need cheering up..!!
