For my daughter, we started with Barbie, trying to diversify by buying different hair colors and skintones - who needs 20 blonde dolls looking (virtually) the same??!! Then we moved on to Bratz. Trouble with Bratz is, they are the SAME six core characters endlessly re-vamped. You can end up with 15 Jade dolls...! So we got her Bratz on the following two conditions: NO repeats of the characters, and NO Bratz accessories. I explained she already has many accessories for Barbie and she can use them for Bratz. I also told her the Bratz accessories are more expensive, and its not necessary to have everything the company makes. She understood and happily complied. But I must say, Bratz are EXTREMELY well made. Much better than Barbie. The amount of detail in the clothing, hair, and face-paint is unbelievable for a mass produced doll.

Sculpting a mermaid tail with polymer clay
This tutorial shows how to sculpt a mermaid tail from polymer clay.
I start with an already baked head and torso.I then add clay to the bottom half of the armature where the tail will be.
The clay is then pulled, smoothed, and shaped.
Next I add a cone shaped piece for the bottom part of the tail, and smooth it into the top.
Now for the tail fin, I make a flat triangle.
I cut a small triangle out of the end.
I then shape and smooth with my fingers.
Next, I use my knife to score lines. Starting with the middle, and then scoring each side.
After I finish scoring the tail fin, I cut a slit in the bottom of the tail.
It looks kinda like a dolphin mouth!
Next the tail fin is inserted into the "dolphin mouth".The mouth is then pressed down to hold the tail fin.
Now this is where you really need patience! Using my tool, I cuttiny scales all the way down the tail. Each scale is done indivduallyand this part of the process takes alot of time.
Gotta scale all the way around and down.
After I finish all the scales, I bake my piece.Once cooled, I paint the tail in the color of my choice.
The end!

How To Sell Dolls On eBay
How To Sell Dolls on eBay
Selling dolls on eBay can be very profitable, or could put you in the red if you don't do your research. One way to see which dolls sell well is by looking at completed auctions on eBay.
Dolls you can buy for resale are everywhere, estate sales, local auctions, thrift stores, garage sales, and your attic. Try to stay away from so proclaimed "collectable dolls". You know the ones. Newer porcelain dolls that are made to be collectable. Unfortunately, most of them don't hold any value because so many of them are made.
Dolls that I've done very well with are dolls from the 70's and 80's, Barbies, Krissy, Cabbage Patch, Strawberry Shortcake, etc.
Okay, so you've done some research and found a doll that sells well.
First, take some great pictures, and lots of them. Close ups of the face, with and without the clothes. And also don't forget to take pictures of any makers marks. Doll buyers like to see those.
Next, inspect the doll in a well lit room. Actually, if you take the doll outside and look at it in the daylight, thats best. Write down any flaws you see so you can write it into the listing.
Next you need to smell the doll, lol. I know, it sounds funny. But doll buyers will ask you if there are any bad or offensive odors.
When you write your listing, you must write it as if there are no pictures in the listing. Give the height of the doll, hair and eye color. Any flaws you see, and bad smells if there are any. Also note any makers marks. When you write, use paragraphs. Its easier for your buyer to read it.
Okay, so you've listed the doll and sold her at a great price!! Now you have to pack her to she gets to your buyer safely. I use tissue paper to wrap each limb then secure it with scotch tape. Then I wrap the body in bubble wrap. I put in in a box with peanuts to cushion the doll on each side. Make sure your box is big enough. The doll should not be touching any of the sides of the box. You can get free boxes from the post office at their website.
And remember, its the sellers responsibilty to make sure the buyer receives their item in the condition it was described. Either require the buyer pay insurance, or buy it yourself. It will eliminate a lot of problems later.
Thanks so much for reading my guide, I hope it guide has been helpful to you.

INCREASE your SALES: Research Before You List !!
It pays to do your homework.
OK, part of the fun of being a Treasure Hunter and ebay seller is finding something in your closet, or friend's attic, that makes your heart skip. "Surely THIS will be a great ebay item!" you think, convinced and secure that your found treasure will be a big hit with buyers.
Now don't get me wrong, a lot of the success I have had as a Seller is based on my "GUT" instincts...I pick something up , examine it, not knowing it's origins or value, and a little voice says"That's a good one", so I ask for it or buy it. Then I research it

Reborns, OOAK, Berenguers, SE's, Reborn Nurseries
The world of reborns is growning into one of the most popular trends for little girls, women, and collectors alike. All are wanting high quality reborns to have, and hold from this day forward. Reborns should make you think baby when you look at them, not doll. When you are searching for a reborn on ebay, remember to look for several things in your hunt...
Look at the photos. They don't have to be high quality, but make sure the baby is represented well, make sure you are bidding on the baby in the photo.
When you are looking at materials, look for key words, Genesis Heat Set Paints.
These paints are the highest quality paints used in reborning. Mohair can range as anything else, good and bad. Make sure to ask the reborn artists what kind of mohair they used if it is not specified in the auction. Some synthetics are just as good as mohair, although you may not want to wash it, it is still beautiful and will withstand the test of time. Remember to look for the process. Reborning step by step.
Look at all the details in the auction. A real reborn will have had most every possible reborn process it can have. If it is truly reborned. If it is not completely reborned there will be missing steps in the process or cheaper supplies used. Some artists do not do every reborning step and some do them differently. Just research the process in the auctions to determine if the baby has actually be reborned or just blushed and given hair. And if it is the right baby for you.
I suggest asking as many questions as you can to the artist whose work you are interested in. If they have nothing to hide, they will answer ALL questions and with detail.
Take all things in to consideration when purchasing a reborn, and think of the age group you are buying for and the quality you are buying.
I use all the best supplies on my reborns AND I back my work with a warranty in case any of the supplies I use fail. I will repair or replace the part that fails on my dolls free of charge. I think if the right supplies are bought and used it will not have to be replaced for a lifetime.
If you have any questions. REMEMBER TO ASK THE ARTIST!and check out my website www.freewebs.com/chrislyn471 for a peek at my work. :)

Composition Uglies
How to find YOUR perfect misfit: A Guide
Composition dolls are dolls that are moulded from a combination of sawdust and glue (usually) that has been painted. Dolls can have either painted on eyes or inset ones, usually made of tin or plastic, though glass sometimes occurs.
Most composition, or compo, dolls were made before 1965. Therefore, they are usually very old and may have a long list of ails. Crazing, cracks, glazed eyes (that creepy 'white eye'), missing fingers, leaking stuffing, etc. Horrible! But oh so lovable!
Just because a doll is coming to pieces, doesn't mean it can't be a favorite! When you shop for Composition on eBay, most mint dolls are high priced and difficult to win. The middle dolls are the dollies everyone ends up in bidding wars for while the poor little crackly dolls are forgotten. The 'crackly' dolls are cheap, anywhere from 99 cents to $20.00. Treasures!
How to find YOUR perfect misfit:
1. Look at the auctions with no gallery picture. As eBay becomes more sophisticated and buyers become more selective, customers tend to scroll down pages at lightning speed, glancing at only the auctions with pictures. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE MISSING! Items with gallery pictures are usually the 'crackly' dolls and are usually cheaper. BUT there are some amazing dolls that are in there as well! Purchasing a Dollhouse: Scales and Types on eBay
Introduction:
The decision has been made, you'd like to purchase a well-made
doll's house at an affordable price. Just how do you choose? It is my
hope that this guide will be a helpful reference to all dollhouse shoppers.
Doll's House Scales:
As most purchasers have seen in other eBay guides, there are many
different scales of dollhouses. Let's talk about a few of them.
Playscale:
This is a larger sized
dollhouse scale made for Barbies and other "play" dolls that young
children enjoy. The furniture in these houses is usually made of
plastic and/or metal and is sturdier so it can be played with for a
good length of time before it deterioriates. Don't confuse all plastic
furniture you see on eBay for barbie sized furniture. There are also
vintage styles of plastic furniture like Renwal and Marx.
Playscale houses are usually made of plastic, but some wood houses can
be found as well.
1/12th Scale:
This is what is considered the "standard" scale for collectible doll's
house furniture. Most adult collectors and builders work in this scale.
The scale is 1" to 1' and is delicate but beautiful. Most furniture in
this scale is wooden and there are a variety of options to choose from
on eBay. There are many eBay artisans who make 1/12th scale dollhouse
furniture and accessories. If you're looking for something you will
more than likely find it, or find someone who will commission a piece
for you! Most 1/12th scale houses are made of wood and come from a kit.
We'll discuss kit types later.
1/24th Scale (Half Scale):
Half scale is also usually a collector's scale. It is 1/2 the size of 1/12th scale and houses are usually made of wood.
1/48th Scale (Quarter Scale):
Quarter scale is also usually a collector's scale. It is 1/2 the
size of 1/24th scale and 1/4 the size of the standard, 1/12th, scale.
Houses in this scale are also usually made of wood.
1/144th Scale (Doll's house for a Doll's house):
This scale is definitely for collector's only! These houses are
in 1/144th scale - that's 1/12th of the standard 1/12th scale. A
careful child could hold these types of houses but they are definitely
NOT for play. These houses usually fit in the palm of one's hand and
are extremely fragile. The houses are made from a variety of materials,
the most popular being laser-cut wood. Beautiful and delicate, these
houses are usually found with many bids and a higher price range (and
rightfully so!).
144th Scale Dollhouse
Doll's House Kits:
Kits are great fun, if
you have patience! Most kits are not to be undertaken lightly. There
are several types of kits, and pretty much all of them have dozens, if
not hundreds, of pieces. Let's review some of the more common types of
kits available on eBay.
A Dura-Craft Kit
Greenleaf:
Greenleaf kits are made from luan, a low-quality 1/8th inch
plywood. Although this wood is lightweight, it is also very fragile
because of its thinness. These kits are somewhat sturdy when put
together but they are also delicate in their own way. Each piece is
precut in a stamp-like manner so it is punched out of a sheet of wood.
The directions can be a bit confusing and the process of building a
Greenleaf house either comes to you or doesn't! For me, it definitely
DOESN'T. These need sanding, and a lot of it! The wood also tends to
splinter if not pre-cut before popped out. Pieces are easily broken if you have a heavy hand.
Greenleafs also tend to go together in a "puzzle" type manner. They
have tabs that insert into holes. Sometimes the cut isn't square and
the holes don't quite fit the tabs, thus, more sanding ensues! The
Greenleaf is good if you want a cheaper kit (they can usually be found
in Auction style sales on eBay) and are not too picky about perfect
realism. The one thing I find a major drag is the fact that the trim on
most, if not all, Greenleaf houses is 1 dimensional and flat. It's
punched out of a board and therefore any porch railings, finials or
trimwork is not realistic, but is, instead, much like a paper doll's
dress, flat.
Dura-Craft:
Duracraft kits are very similar to Greenleaf in structure except
I find that their "tabs" are more hidden and the houses come together a
bit better. The trimwork included is still flat. From the kits I have
assembled, I have noticed that the edge trim is separate and not made
of
luan. This makes the houses a bit sturdier, as Greenleaf kits do not
usually have edging. You might want to invest in a mitre box or a good
eye, though,
this trim is NOT pre-cut. I've also noticed that many times the
shingles are pre-printed and that makes a great guideline for working
with cedar shake shingles.
Artply:
They look great, right? They do, but they don't go together "squarely" and are made of, you guessed
it, luan! The kits are pleasing when they are finished but I have noticed
that sometimes the directions seem to be referring to some other kit
that, well, doesn't exist! The picture on the front of the box is
sometimes different to the product inside and I've also noticed that
the dimensions of the rooms in the dollhouses are sometimes very, very
odd.
Arrow:
I really looked forward to making an Arrow house from a vintage
kit until I realized that they are no sturdier than any other luan
kit. The cool thing about them is that the flooring and other "bits" of
the house are sometimes pre-printed onto the wood! They aren't bad for
their price, and the style of the houses isvery aesthetically pleasing. If only the kits
could be made a bit sturdier. Give and take some quality for the pleasing
vintage style of the houses.
Corona:
Corona are made by Greenleaf.
Real Good Toys:
Ahh, real Good Toys, one of my favourite kits to put together!
Most of these are precut (if not all of them) and the pieces fit
together well. They are easy to assemble if you have the time and
patience to read the directions. I believe these are made of 3/8th inch
ply which makes them a lot sturdier than a Greenleaf kit.
Real Good Toys make a fine product and one is able to see that just by
looking at the finished work. The houses are beautiful! If you've got
time and patience for building and don't mind using the occasional
nail, these are great to work with!
Assembled Doll's Houses:
If you prefer to buy a house that is already assembled, there
are many options for you on eBay. Check through the "Houses" category
in the Dollhouse Miniatures section and browse in your price range
using eBay's Advanced Search Options. Don't be overwhelmed by high
shipping costs, doll's houses are hard to package and usually are very
big!
A Tin Doll's House
Tin Houses:
There are many vintage "tin" houses, but take care, these could
be hazardous for child's play. These are very collectible and look
cool, too! Many of these houses have lithographed scenery on their
walls and exterior. Some even have working windows and doors.
The Orchid by Corona Concepts (A subsidiary of Greenleaf)
Wooden Houses:
One can get a good feel of the quality of the houses by reading
the information about the kits listed above. Look for houses made of
3/8th or thicker ply if you intend to have children playing with the
house. For collectors any thickness will work if you like the style of
the house! The most beautifully constructed houses in my opinion are
The House That Jack Built houses. These are so nice to look at and are
suitable for play! Let your eye be the judge and if you are curious ask
questions!
A Playscale Plastic House
Plastic Houses:
If you've got a tinier tot these are great to play with. The pieces
usally fit well into the houses and some of the houses can be folded
up. I've seen some very nice plastic barbie houses that have easy
cleanup and hours of fun!
General Suggestions for Buying:
Here are some helpful hints I have learned the hard way. Please
take them to heart when shopping for a doll's house or miniatures. I hope they help to save a lot of frustration!
Quality:
If you're buying a pre-made wooden doll's house be careful to
look for an auction that has many clear photos. I've fallen into the
trap of the poorly made dollhouse twice now. The first time, I bid on a
house with only one photo. Big mistake! The house came to me and it was
barely hanging on. Everything had to be disassembled and glued back
together. The second time, I looked for an auction at a reasonable
price with many photos. I found one, but failed to notice the large
palm plant in every single photo. It was covering the cracked wall. The
pieces of the house were also falling off and the seller had taped them
on for the photos. I was highly disappointed to find the "beautiful"
house described in the photos was really a mess of wood scraps and
missing pieces. Luckily, this did not scare me, but it did show me what
to look for in the future! Buyer beware, you could be in for a scare!
Ask questions and SAVE the photos on the auction. I've been fooled
this
way before, as well. The seller lists something that says "look at
photos to see what you get" and then changes the outside linked photo
after the auction's end. There is no guarantee you will get what is
pictured! When the product arrives it's not quite what was there, or
it's nothing similar at all! Save any answers to questions you ask.
They may come in
handy later. I'm not trying to discredit all sellers, there are many
sellers who love minis and know what they are doing, but there is
always the chance that you find one who doesn't. Be careful, check the
feedback, check the
feedback, and, oh yes, check the feedback!
One thing to look for in feedback is dollhouse miniature sales! If this
person has collected miniatures or specializes in selling them they may
be better off for you than someone who is unfamiliar with the quality
of miniatures and describing them. Always get insurance, if it's not
offered ask the seller if they would offer it for you.
Dollhouses are usually delicate and smaller pieces may break during
shipping. Insurance is always a comfort.
Shipping:
Buying assembled houses on eBay can be difficult for many reasons. Many
sellers will only sell to someone who can pick up the house in person.
If you're inside the USA you can see what kind of dilemma this poses.
If you cannot find a house you like in your area, save the expense of
gas and find a seller who ships their homes! Sometimes you find a great
deal near you, always check within a reasonable radius for doll's
houses.
Take heed to look for a seller that has positive feedback and
experience in packaging miniatures. I have twice received dollhouse
lots packaged in cereal boxes with no padding. Needless to say, many of
the miniatures were broken and the seller went missing. Not that every
seller will be this way, but there are many people on eBay trying to
sell collectibles passed down to them who just aren't sure how to
package these items.
Conclusion:
Enjoy shopping for a doll's house! If you have any doubts, don't
buy! There are always a number of houses on eBay. If "that house" is
calling you, bring it home to enjoy! If you have questions, ask!

Not that every
seller will be this way, but there are many people on eBay trying to
sell collectibles passed down to them who just aren't sure how to
package these items.
Conclusion:
Enjoy shopping for a doll's house! If you have any doubts, don't
buy! There are always a number of houses on eBay. If "that house" is
calling you, bring it home to enjoy! If you have questions, ask!

How to clean your Teddy Bear
I have been repairing and cleaning teddy bears for 25 years and would like to share a few tips with you on how to clean your teddy bear that you have found on Ebay.
It is hard to tell the condition of your Teddy Bear from a picture. Here are a few steps to make sure your bear is clean and free of bugs that might harm your other bears.
1. Place teddy or other soft toy in a plastic bag and place it in your freezer for 42 hours. This will destroy and bug you might not see.
2. Depending on the type of material you need to follow different instruction.
A. If the teddy is made from plush you can surface wash it with the suds of laundry detergent. My favorite for all bear material is cream of tarter dissolved in water and lightly washed. Them you could place the bear in a pillow case and place in your dryer. Make sure you turn the heat off in your dryer.
Do not be afraid to open a seam of the bear and empty out the stuffing and give the skin a good hand washing and lay it flat to dry. I only suggest this in extreme cases and it would not hurt to look on Ebay for a Teddy Bear Repair expert.
B. Mohair or other wools are a little more difficult. You must gently wash with a cloth and just the suds of laundry soap. Then air dry.

Cleaning vinyl dolls
Here is an easy way to clean vinyl dolls. I use whitening toothpaste (specifically Crest) and a little warm water. Apply toothpaste directly to skin, dip soft cloth in warm water and rub gently. Sometimes if there is a stubborn stain I will apply the toothpaste directly to the stain and let it sit for a minute or two before scrubbing. Rinse with warm water and repeat if necessary. You may have to repeat several times to get the results you want. The dolls skin should brighten up considerably. Also, If you wish to wash her hair I use mild shampoo or hand dishwashing detergent. A great way to get out tangles and/or soften up stiff hair is to use spray on/leave on conditioner and a comb with wide gaps between the teeth. I will spray a little on the hair and rub it in then spray some on the comb. It helps the comb slide through the hair better, thus not pulling it out.

CRAFT SHOW CASH...ESSENTIAL DO'S AND DON'TS
Successful craft show selling actually begins before you leave the house. You've researched the show, submitted your application, been accepted, have your inventory packed...you're good to go. Wait a minute! What am I forgetting? Look around...double check everything.
This guide will help you understand what you need to take to the show and why. It will also suggest things you should and shouldn't do in order to have a successful day at the craft show.
As an exhibitor, you will usually be required to provide your own table, chairs and all the otrher trappings for your craft display. You will check and re-check to make sure you've taken everything you need for a good show.
There is a lot of packing and toting that goes along with exhibiting at a craft show. However, it won't be long until you've developed your own easy system for moving your crafts from home to the show. I suggest you make a list of all the things you need to take and the things you must do to get ready. Even after years of exhibiting at craft show, I still make a list...and check it twice. It has saved my hide more than once!
The type of show (indoors/outdoors), how many days you'll be there and how far you must travel are just a few of the things you will need to consider in determining what you must take. You will

Identifying Mohair vs Synthetic plush teddy bear
I have had quite a few people over the years of collecting mohair teddy bears and animals ask "How to do you tell the difference between mohair and synthetic plush?"
I have found one solution to be pretty effective for individuals that have trouble identifying mohair from synthetic fabric easily that I have named the ash test.
